Paula Rafferty – Art Therapy Program Director, Limerick Prison for Men (Ireland)

Trained as a fashion designer, Paula has been working with textiles for many years. Her natural transition into quilting officially began in 2002 after joining the Irish Patchwork Society, when she started attending workshops by local and international teachers. “I really leaned towards Art Quilts and each quilt I created was a learning process, exploring new techniques, finding out which I liked”.  Read more at  www.edqg.ca

Day 1: Playtime!
Initially we will build some textured background fabrics using wet mediums such as acrylic and fabric paint. We will start with colour washes and blending colours with reference to basic colour theory. We will then look at resist techniques using stencils, rubbing plates and the environment (e.g. nearby surfaces such as walls). Then we will look at transferring images onto fabric using a variety of techniques such as paper lamination and fabric decoupage.

Day 2: Collage and Construction
On day two we will assemble small quilts using all your prepared fabrics from day one. We will look at some basic design principles and techniques. A collage will be assembled onto your background fabrics and secured with fusible materials and stitching. We will then look at adding more colour and texture with oil sticks, wax crayons and watercolour pencils and blocks to complete your quilt.
